About the Instructor

Lisa Houck works in watercolor, oil on wood, ceramics, mosaics and etching. Each medium allows her to invent new ways to express her view of nature through color and pattern. Her artwork has been exhibited widely, and is in numerous public and private collections, including The Boston Athenaeum, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston Children's Hospital, Fidelity Investments, four libraries in Broward County Florida, Hale and Dorr, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Statement: I love the surfaces and colors of mosaic tiles and the way they can express the meticulous patterns I use in my paintings. Both mosaics and ceramics are also durable, which makes them a good choice for public art projects.

Many of these pieces are filled with improbable plants with distinctive personalities. Some are big and pushy; some are delicate and quiet; others are prickly. I like compositions that are complex enough to suggest something new each time you view the artwork.

About the Medium

In mosaics “andamento”, or the flow and movement of the mosaic tesserae is important to creating a balanced and pleasing composition. In this class we will work with your own designs to create 8” x 8” mosaics. These pieces will be constructed on wooden substrates using glue and they are intended to be hung indoors. You will learn to cut and grind tiles and to work with glass and ceramic tiles to achieve a variety of shapes and textures. Please bring some drawings, photos or other sources of inspiration for your mosaic designs.
